Ellenborough Mausoleum

The mausoleum is built in stone and attached at right angles to the north side of the church. Entrance to the building used to be gained via a Gothic doorway in the north wall but this has now been blocked. There is no access from the church either, but a small marble tablet, designed in a Greek Revival style (1873, by R E and C Marshall) marks the site. It has a coloured coat of arms on its pyramidal top.

History

According to the Buildings of England, the mausoleum was built in 1868 “initially to receive the Hon. Dudley Law”. He was the illegitimate son of Edward Law, 2nd Baron and 1st Earl of Ellenborough (1790-1871) who was Governor of India from 1841 to 1844. The Earl bought the Southam Delabere estate in 1833, and greatly enlarged the house, the later additions designed by Alexander Roos. In 1848 he also bought Prescott House, which was rebuilt c.1856, where he is said to have housed two Indian concubines. As he had no legitimate children, the title died with him.
