Yule Mausoleum

Freestanding mausoleum in the form of a garden summerhouse over sculptural arrangement in Bianco el Mare Marble by Philip Lindsey Clark.  Square-in plan, having a hipped roof of red tiles with round-profile ridge tiles and stepped tiles to hips.  Ashlar piers to corners having engaged columns to inner face. Sculpture comprising draped chair with inscription from Kiplings Jungle Book and box tomb having reliefs of Sir David’s jute mills and plantations.  Sited in wooded grounds within a railed enclosure.

History

The mausoleum of Sir David Yule (1858-1927) a wealthy jute and cotton mill owner, who divided his time between visiting his mills in India and his English estate at Hanstead, Hertfordshire. He was knighted in 1922 with a baronetcy after King George V had visited his mills in Calcutta. Sir David returned to England in 1925 and spent the remainder of his years at Hanstead. At the time of his death, in 1928, he was reputed to be the richest man in the British Empire.
