The High Victorian design of this striking mausoleum is based on that of the barrel-topped tombs found at Xanthos in Anatolisa, Turkey, dating from about the 4th century BC. The vigorously carved Portland stone ‘sarcophagus’ is raised on a striped pink and grey granite base and the windows – a rose window over the entrance and triple lancet to the rear – are filled with plate tracery.

This is the earliest of the mausolea belonging to members of the Ralli family. It was built following the death of John Peter Ralli (d.1863) one of the four brothers who came to London from the Greek island of Chios. The other three brothers are also buried in this part of the cemetery.
The mausoleum was designed by G E Street, one of the foremost architects of the Victorian period. The last interment in the vault was made in 1961.
