History

Within the pediment is a cartouche bearing the inscription “5th July 1749 John Meriton Pensioner was ye first Man Buried in this Ground”. Thomas Masterman Hardy, Nelson’s friend and the Flag Captain of HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar (later First Sea Lord of the Admiralty) was buried in the mausoleum in 1839. The building was restored in 1999.
