Roger Bowdler was born and educated in Cambridge, where he completed a PhD on macabre 17th century church monuments. Since 1989 he has worked for English Heritage, where he is now Designation Director, responsible for listing, scheduling and other national designations. An original trustee of the MMT in 1997, and chairman, 2008 to 2013. A Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, he has written various articles on tombs and mausolea, and presented several slots on the BBC2 series One Foot in the Past on these topics. As well as an ongoing interest in ossuaries, skeletons and death's heads on tombs, Roger is increasingly interested in outdoor tombs and the inexhaustible splendours of British churchyards. He lives in Hampstead.
